He told himself he would go alone.
Just the ocean, the music in the distance, and whatever the night decided to become.
The air is warm when he arrives. Sweet fruit moves through the breeze from open drinks and passing hands, mango milk and guava glowing beside flashes of pineapple and quince. The shoreline hums with voices and laughter. Someone pulls him into the circle.
The night begins to move. Coconut pulp and lime rise through the air like fresh cocktails, cane sugar and melon catching the soft light as the crowd grows closer, the rhythm of the music pulling strangers into something shared.
Later, when the tide slows and the sky darkens, the warmth settles in. Rum and ambergris drift through the salt air while white driftwood and milky vanilla linger quietly against the skin.
He came alone.
But when he finally leaves the beach, the night follows with him, footsteps beside his in the sand.
